The Basics Behind Antique Furniture

I've been an antique collector all my life. My grandfather collected antiques, my father was an antiques dealer and I have continued the tradition by collecting antique desks and, strangely, antique clock parts. I say this to help you understand why I'm qualified to give you advice about choosing antique furniture for your home.

When you're shopping for antique furniture you have to have a different mindset than when you're buying regular items. Antique furniture isn't really meant to be used. It can be used and should be used, but when you're looking at modern furniture, it is primarily meant to be used. That's the difference. With antiques age, pedigree, condition and price/value are just as important as aesthetics.

You're Not Buying Ordinary Furniture

To choose the right antiques for your home as opposed to a dealership or gallery you want something aesthetically pleasing as well as historical. You could be making a fantastic financial investment with your antique purchases for your retirement or your children if you buy carefully. You can't say the same for purchases you make from Ikea.

Some Simple Tips

The most important pieces of advice when buying antiques is to know your own home first. Antique furniture should be on display, but not in danger of damage. There may be only certain pieces that will fit comfortably in your home. Another important thing to do before you go shopping for antique furniture is to do some research. Also, do some budgeting. Antiques can be expensive and you don't want to get carried away. Finally, avoid the impulse to buy anything the first time you see it. Have an independent antique dealer look at any finds you've made.

Developing an eye for antiques takes years to develop, but if you'll put in the time and effort you'll have a lot of fun and could potentially make a lot of money. Remember age, pedigree, condition and price and you'll rarely go wrong. I hope you'll enjoy shopping for antique furniture as much as I do.
